Let's explore...(Series) Magical Huesca, North East of Spain
It’s Friyay. Time to use some of your downtime to plan a future getaway. 😎
How about Huesca in Spain? It is one of those ideal places to explore if you want to be surrounded by pristine nature.
Where exactly is it?
The Province of Huesca (pronounced ‘Weska’) is in the North Eastern part of Spain - close to the Pyrenees mountain range (which marks the boundaries between Spain and France when not interrupted by Andorra). Together with the provinces of Zaragoza and Teruel, Huesca forms the region of Aragon. In terms of driving, it is c.250 km from San Sebastian, c. 270km from Barcelona and c.380km from Madrid.
What’s its history?
Huesca was ruled by the Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. It subsequently formed part of the “Kingdom of Aragon” and then the “Crown of Aragon” when the Aragon princess married the Count of Barcelona. The Crown became a superpower in the 15th century when its future King* married the future Queen of Castille*. The Crown, at its peak, controlled not only parts of Spain and France but also Italy and Greece. Were Ferdinand II and Isabella I in love?* I don’t know 🤷♀️. They are however regarded as founders of today’s Spain. This article provides some interesting info regarding this power couple and their deeds.
Places to visit and things to do?
Discover the breathtaking landscapes of The National Park Ordesa y Monte Perdido (a UNESCO world heritage site).
Visit the medieval city of Jaca which is a stop on the Camino de Santiago route. You can visit the cathedral, monasteries and citadel. Or ski, trek, and/or just wander around the city, enjoying the scenery, artisanal pastries and of course tapas!
Note: Not technically, in Huesca but nearby and worth checking out: The region “Las Cinco Villas” for medieval castles and churches, cobbled streets and stunning views.
